Wonky WomEn
Allow me to introduce my newest Whimsical Wonky Woman and her compatriots. The main character’s name is Silver Fox and this is my Ode to a New Season. So, a few years ago a friend of mine challenged me to go with her on a journey to let our hair go gray. I sort of tried but just couldn’t get there. She did and she looks marvelous. But then, she’s thin and would look gorgeous anyway. Then, about a year ago I tried again, but again, didn’t quite get there. About two months ago, another friend brought this all to life again as she quietly and elegantly decided to embrace this new season in her life by going gray in a cold turkey sort of way. That means that she decided not to get highlights or lowlights to help her along the way but to just trudge through as the gray stripe and the gray around the edges became more obvious. She also decided not to get a really short haircut to make it seem less noticable. “This is me.” she said. She looks amazing and has truly embraced the new season and feels liberated! I so admire her and all the other strong women out there who can go down this path. It’s not for everyone, of course, and I admire those strong women who feel more confident by coloring their hair. It’s all about what we need to do at any point in time to find our own peace. This painting is for my friend who is going through this journey right now and sharing her experience with others. I’m inspired by her grace and tenacity as well as her courage in making the leap and seeing it through. And, it’s so fun to feel her energy when she says it is liberating! Makes me want to try again. You see, what my friend has taught me is that this journey and this new season is about way more than whether to go gray. It’s about acceptance of self and it’s about feeling just right in your own skin, and it’s about knowing deep down inside that you are enough. It’s knowing that you are fierce and can handle what life sends your way with grace and aplomb and gratitude for all your blessings. And, it’s about acceptance of all the new seasons of our lives as we experience them. So, here’s to all the amazing women in my life who choose to go down this natural path and to this friend, in particular, for making it seem fun and less scary. Here’s to your New Season!! Here’s to all the Whimsical Wonky Women in our lives! L’Chaim!
